What is the purpose of AVID?

AVID is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System and supports AVID's mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. At the core of AVID’s mission statement is the belief that all students can successfully achieve when held to high expectations and are properly supported.

AVID ensures that ALL students will:

Be taught skills and behaviors for academic success
Be provided an intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
Create a positive peer group
Develop a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination

What is AVID Elementary?

AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System, and supports AVID's mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Based on the same learning foundation that underlies AVID Secondary, AVID Elementary is designed to be embedded into the daily instruction of all elementary classrooms across entire grade levels to maintain schoolwide structures.

AVID Elementary's implementation resources, professional development, and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through the growth mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams and fulfilling their aspirations.

Components of AVID Elementary

During each stage of learning, AVID Elementary incorporates:

Student Success Skills – encompassing communication skills (e.g. listening, speaking, writing), self-advocacy skills, and study skills.
Organizational Skills – both mental and physical; students are given organizational tools, as well as time management, goal-setting, and note-taking strategies.
WICOR Lessons and L-WICOR Lessons – emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn in all content areas.
Partnerships – among students, classrooms, grade levels, schools, feeder patterns, families and communities.

AVID Student Expecations

Students in grades 3-5 are expected to have their AVID binder organized according to AVID guidelines which are taoght by teacher in class. They should bring their AVID binder to school and home everyday. Agendas should be signed nightly by an adult who reviews with the student what they did that day and the assignments, tests, projects, or quizzes that they may have coming up. Binder checks are performed informally throughout the year and formally three times a year for a grade.

Students in grades TK- 2 are provided with Nikki's folders that should be brought to and from school daily. Students should be showing a parent/guardian daily the important information in their folders as well as having a behavior log signed and returned.

AVID Supplies

One of the key components of AVID is Organization. In order to be successful a student needs to be organinzed. Harvest Valley provides all of the supplies that students need to be successful AVID Scholars. Below is a list of supplies that are provided to the students at Harvest Valley.
